1. Some ways that Leslie and Margot address the students’ need when introducing new words include:
ReplyDelete Making word learning a community experience ( sitting at the carpet together or desks grouped together to form a horseshoe so that all can see and feel part of the group
Providing opportunities for a variety of multisensory experiences and routines experiences with words(chanting the vocabulary words and clapping the syllables) and (“ My Turn” “Your Turn” chant in the immediate grades and using morphological knowledge to help determine the meanings of words
2. Margot teaches students how to context clues when introducing new vocabulary by are using a modified cloze procedure to introduce each vocabulary word that allows the students to make inferences and use sentence level context clues. Leslie also uses the same type of cloze activity with sentence strips to introduce vocabulary words but the vocabulary words are hidden during the sentence prediction phase. It is important that students are learning these strategies that will help them become independently word solvers.
